For the first time equipment in the game universe can now be designed or modified by players. Each weapon, item of cargo, or upgrade is defined in a simple text file that anyone can edit. A technical manual explains the parameters, enabling a virtually unlimited amount of new upgrades.

As in Flatspace II, ultimate objective is to destroy an enemy race, the scarrid, but there are many other goals for the player. These include gaining money for new equipment and ships, proceeding up various ranks or finding official game secrets. Flatspace IIk is the latest and best version of Flatspace so far and includes the full Flatspace II soundtrack album and a 300dpi stargrid printout.
